Goal setting for lazy people

Ok, ok. You aren’t lazy, per se. You’re just lazy about goal setting. Good news! I’ve put together a PDF that will quickly help you goal set for 2021.

Why goal set? Goals align your focus and give you something specific to work towards.

Why should I write them down? Documenting your goals in written form is strongly associated with goal success, and people who can describe or picture their goals are 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish them than people who don’t.

What should my goals be? Literally anything. Just make sure they actually matter to YOU. Your connection to, or WHY, is how you develop an emotional connection to your goal, ie give a sh*t about actually achieving it. It’s what drives you. It’s what gives you the feels!

OK, so how do I do that? Be S.M.A.R.T. Ha! Make them:

  • specific - “I want to get a promotion” doesn’t say much. “I want to be promoted to a PR manager position at my current job, or another luxury fashion brand.” What is your precise outcome?

  • measurable - this one is easy; quantify what success means. How will you know you achieved your goal? If you want a raise, how much moola are we talking? Want to grow your businesses’ IG follow count? By how many more followers?

  • actionable - set goals that are stretching and set you up to win, not fail. If you set unrealistic goals that are near impossible to accomplish within the time scale you specify, ie, become Rihanna by 2022, you are setting yourself up for some sad, sad times. Make sure you have the necessary resources and time to accomplish what you want. Does your goal require getting more professional experience? Moving to a more metropolitan city like LA or NY? Make sure to take that into consideration.

  • relevant - make sure they are relevant to YOUR life and purpose. This is about you, and what you want for yourself. Do you really want to accomplish this?

  • time bound - be clear on what needs to happen when, otherwise, it’s easy to procrastinate. Set a deadline.

What’s an example? Sure.

  • Typical goal: I want a fashion internship

  • SMART goal: I want to intern in the design department of a luxury fashion brand in New York next summer.

    • some considerations: Do you have the money to support having an internship in New York? Do you have enough previous experience to get an internship of this calibre?

  • Typical goal: I want a promotion.

  • SMART goal: I want to be promoted to Senior PR Manager at my current job.

    • some considerations: Is your department structured in a way to allow for this type of promotion? Have you executed above and beyond what is expected of you? Have you worked with the business long enough to warrant a promotion?

Cool. Now what? Download my free PDF and let’s DO THIS.
